Arabsat and the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU, based in Tunisia), are deploying a unique ground-breaking satellite-based content exchange for ASBU members and Arabsat customers throughout the entire MENA region: the "Multimedia Exchange Network Over Satellite", MENOS, a new revolutionary broadband IP-based product, developed and commercialized by Newtec.

Arabsat & ASBU cooperation
Arabsat will provide the satellite capacity on BADR-4 in Ku-band and on BADR-6 in C-band; ASBU will provide:

• Network planning;
• Network operation;
• Maintenance and support;
• Equipment;
• The role of access network provider, assuming the necessary network management responsibilities.

MENOS for ASBU is designed for:

• Supporting 250 Virtual Networks;
• In a first phase, more than 1,000 Satellite Interactive Terminal (SITs);
• Expandable to 5,000 SITs.

Sub-network operators could include:

• ASBU members
• Corporate networks
• Private broadcast networks and ISPs
• TV and Radio Organizations
• International and Regional Organizations
• Non-Governmental Organizations
• News Agencies
• Universities
• Ministries

• Star-based network,
       – High complexity and cost in the HUB
       – Low complexity and cost in the remote terminal (SIT)
• Multiplexing all services into one transport mechanism - IP,

• VPNs can be built to allow multiple virtual networks with their specific applications separated from one another,
       – E.g. National or regional networks
• Security measures for VPNs,
       – Full encryption of data

       – Efficient network operation
       – IP statistical multiplexing of all services
       – Differentiation between time critical and non-time critical services
• Efficient bandwidth use,
       – New DVB-S2 standards with minimum 30% gain over DVB-S
       – MPEG-4 with about 30-40% gain over MPEG-2
